Home remedies for dry eyes - Warm Compresses

Home remedies for dry eyes – Warm Compresses

Another very important home remedies for dry eyes is the use of a warm compresses to melt the oil contained in the meibomian glands. This is usually very effective for evaporative dry eyes due to a meibomian gland dysfunction. Some people will use a wet washcloth over the sink to apply a wet warm compress. I tried this technic myself and find it not effective. The washcloth do not stay warm long enough to give you a therapeutic effect and to help unblocking the meibomian glands. To be effective, a warm compress application must keep the eyelid over 40 degrees celcius for at least 5 minutes. You can’t achieve that with a wet washcloth. It doesn’t stay warm long enough. Warm compresses designed for dry eyes can do that because they can stay warm for long enough to give you a therapeutic effect. For people who did the Lipiflow treatment, you will certainly be told to continue warm compresses few times a week as part of your home remedies for dry eyes.

Keep in mind that when you have evaporative dry eyes it is because the oil is missing or not good quality from your tear film. That oil can sometimes become as thick as toothpaste but it should normaly be like olive oil. By using warm compresses, you melt this oil and make it more fluid so you can unblock the meibomian glands with eyelids massage.  For that reason,  the heat must be constant for at least 10 minutes.

home remedies for dry eyes - eyelid massage

Home remedies for dry eyes – Eyelid massage

Right after the warm compresses, it is important to proceed with a gentle but firm eyelid massage. You can find a lot of information on the internet including this website and Youtube on how to do a effective eyelid massage. The eyelid massage, as explained already, has the purpose to empty the meibomian glands from the oil that was blocked inside the glands because it was too thick. Once the meibomian glands are cleared, they can start again to produce the oil that is so precious for our ocular comfort. Remember that you should always do the eyelid massage AFTER warm compresses. The reason is that it will be a lot easier to express that oil once it has been heated and melted. Just think about butter that you heat, it becomes liquid. Same thing with the oil produced by the meibomian glands. Make sure to always wash properly you hands before performing the eyelid massage.

Home remedies for dry eyes – Omega 3

Many eye doctors are recommending flaxseed oil and fish oil supplements for their patients who suffer from dry eyes. Daily supplements of flaxseed oil or fish oil,  appear to reduce dry eye symptoms, including burning, stinging, redness and intermittent visual disturbances. As a home remedies for dry eyes, make sure that you include omega 3 in your diet. The EPA that we find in Omega 3 have the capacity to reduce the ocular inflammation and we all know now that ocular inflammation plays a major role in dry eye disease. Make sure that you choose good quality omega 3 very rich in EPA, since you need that to have a effect on inflammation. I prefer liquid omega 3 but I think that is a question of personnal preferences. Home remedies for dry eyes - Eyelid hygiene

Home remedies for dry eyes – Eyelid hygiene

After warm compresses and eyelid massage, you have to clean up those eyelids from all the oil that have been melted. Some people are still suggesting diluated baby shampoo in warm water but I never liked this method because my eyes were always irritated after. I now use Ocusoft or LidHygenix and I find it very soft but very effective to clean et remove debris from my eyelid. A lot of women also uses it as a makeup remover since it is a very gentle product but very effective to remove makeup. Eyelid hygiene must be part of your daily routine the same way that you brush your teeth every day. I do eyelid hygiene every morning and every night. So remember that home remedies for dry eyes must include a proper eyelid hygiene.
