Eyelid Care for Dry Eye Treatment
Eyelid Care is very important when you have blepharitis and/or dry eyes.
Eyelid care is important to minimize dry eye symptoms because the problem may not be your eyes but rather your eyelids.
Eyelid Care is recommended if you have meibomian gland dysfunction. As explained in the other dry eye articles, the meibomian glands are located in the eyelids. When you have posterior blepharitis, which means inflammation of the eyelids, the meibomian glands can stop working normaly. If that happens, it is very likely that you will start experience dry eye symptoms. Since the oil, usualy produced by the meibomian glands, is missing or in bad quality, evaporative dry eye will occur.
So when you have blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), eyelid care is something that you have to take very seriously. But how can you take care of your eyelids ?
Some people suggest that you diluate baby shampoo in warm water but I personnaly never liked this. I found that shampoo irritates my eyes. Do not forget that shampoo is soap and soap tends to wash away the precious oil that we have on the ocular surface produced by the meibomian gland. I use twice daily a eyelid cleanser. I like the Ocusoft or LidHygenix but you can find many different brand on the market. At the DryEyes-Store.com you will find at a very competitive price LidHygenix and Ocusoft.
The way I like to practice my eyelid care treatment is right after the warm compresses. I use warm compresses because I have meibomian gland dysfunction. Right after that, i perform a quick eyelid massage and I finally clean my eyelids with one of these products.
Eyelid Care is important not only for MGD but also if you have stye, chalazion or ocular rosacea. The skin that composes the eyelid is a very delicate skin and you must make sure that you use products that have been designed for this very sensitive skin.
Over time, debris and bacteria build up on the eyelashes contributing to ocular irritation. A “biofilm” forms on the eyelids. This biofilm not only enters the ocular surface, but is a breeding ground for bacterial and parasitic (demodex) infections. In addition, many patients have inflammation of the oil glands in their eyelids (blepharitis), and daily hygiene helps remove the staph bacteria that contributes to the inflammation. Hygiene also removes the oily debris from the glands which can irritate the ocular surface.
Eyelid Care products are also a good makeup removers. If you are wearing mascara or eyeliner, make sure that you use makeup made for sensitive eyes and that you remove that makeup everyday with a makeup remover made for sensitive eyes. You can use LidHygenix or Ocusoft to remove makeup since they are very effective to remove makeup.
